Leaving gallstones untreated may seem harmless if you’re not in regular pain. But over time, these stones can lead to serious health issues. Let’s look at the possible complications:

1. Gallbladder Inflammation (Cholecystitis):

One of the most common problems caused by gallstones is inflammation of the gallbladder. This is called acute cholecystitis. Symptoms include:

• Sudden, severe pain in the upper abdomen
• Fever and chills
• Nausea and vomiting

If not treated quickly, the gallbladder can become infected or even burst, which is a medical emergency.

2. Blocked Bile Duct (Choledocholithiasis):

Sometimes, gallstones slip into the bile ducts and block the flow of bile. This can cause:

• Severe pain
• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes)
• Dark urine and pale stools
• High fever with chills

A blocked bile duct can damage your liver and lead to serious infection called cholangitis. This condition requires immediate hospitalization.

3. Pancreatitis:

Gallstones can also block the pancreatic duct, which connects to the bile duct. This can cause acute pancreatitis, a life-threatening condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed. Symptoms include:

• Intense abdominal pain
• Nausea and vomiting
• High fever
• Swollen abdomen

Pancreatitis caused by gallstones needs emergency treatment and often hospitalization.

4. Gallbladder Gangrene or Abscess:

When gallstones cause long-term inflammation, the tissue of the gallbladder can die (gangrene) or form a pus-filled pocket (abscess). Both conditions can spread infection throughout the body and can be fatal if untreated.

5. Gallbladder Cancer (Rare but Possible):

Although rare, untreated gallstones for many years can increase the risk of gallbladder cancer. This type of cancer is aggressive and often found late.

So even though the chances are low, regular monitoring or removal of the gallbladder may be advised if you’re at risk.
